How to do : Ball & Burlap

Tonight I'm going to post photos on how to make a ball & burlap. Why do we do this? Sometimes during construction we need to transplant a tree. This method enables us to protect the root system plus making sure the soil around the roots is intact. However, this method is suitable for plants that has grown past a seedling size (greater than 3 feet in height) to a sapling (a tree with a trunk diameter at chest level) or tree size.

These photos are actually taken during my degree years in UPM.

First identify the plant you want to transplant. Clear the soil surface and carefully dig out the plant, making sure the roots and the soil around it is not disturbed.

This is how your root ball should look like. Place your sackcloth on the ground, put soil in the middle and cut like shown in the photo below. This cutting divides the cloth into 4 section that will be used to wrap the soil+root ball.

Next, bring up 2 corners of the cloth, and then the other 2 and finally 'pin' the corners using nails or sticks.

When all four corners are 'pinned', it should look like the photo below.

Then add a bit of top soil and make sure all sides are filled with soil. We don't want any unattended space in there. The ball & burlap must be compact and firm.

Then tie the ball! This task should be done at least with a friend/assistant. Unless you have super strong arms to hold everything in one time.

Last but not least, tie the end underneath it. Done!

From the photos, tell me what do you see?

Yes. It looks exactly like an eye. This is actually the residence to one of the most famous model - Naomi Campbell. When we are in school, we are encouraged to really explore our creativity. To really step out of the box. To think of the impossible but at the same time, come out with reasoning that make it sound NOT impossible. We are encouraged to not directly translate an object into a design. For example, turning a palm tree into a lighting (???). Until now, I just cannot accept the idea of directly projecting a palm tree into a decorative lighting.

However, in reality there are some clients who like the idea of direct interpretation of design. But as designers, it is our job to manipulate the object and make it interesting and acceptable as a work of art.

For me, this design successfully adopt an eye into a residence. I guess only the bold will be crazy enough to insert a big 'eye' in her house :)

WHAT IS VERSICELL?

VersiCell® drainage cell is a lightweight interlocking plastic structural module used for sub-surface drainage or to form tanks for underground water percolation and stormwater management systems. I've heard about this VersiCell a few times, but only after one of my students proposed the use of this VersiCell in his project, I decided I should dig more. My good friend & also ex-classmate, Azmi suggested me a group in Facebook about vertical landscapes. Owh how I love the internet :)

OK, back to VersiCell.

I had the honour to attend my husband's big boss birthday party at Ampang. It was a small event, attended by close friends and family. The restaurant seemed simple but the inside was beautiful. White was the main theme of this restaurant. Even though they use fake flowers, the decorator beautifully arranged it and it seem very natural indeed.

I never fancy fake flowers but lately manufacturers manage to design them almost flawlessly that it seem almost real. I guess, to cheat once in a while is OK :)

I have also seen a few weddings using this concept and in photos it looks very beautiful.

Miami Beach SoundScape/Lincoln Park by West 8

When I was a student, one of my favourite books is Design for Fun: Playgrounds, written by Marta Rojals Del Alamo. This book contains creative designs of playgrounds, guidelines in creating an entertaining learning environment for kids which also provides an aesthetically pleasing public space. The designers carefully use the knowledge of science and install play things that not only enjoyable for kids, even adults. The closest resemblance (that I know of) is Petrosains, located inside KLCC.

If you're thinking of buying a book this semester, maybe you can consider this book. Or any other book that manipulates daily science inside a design.

In 2009 West 8’s winning design for Lincoln Park was unanimously chosen by the Miami Beach Commission. The park is part of the New World Symphony Campus and also a new meeting place in town. Centrally located in the Art District at the monumental terminus of lively Lincoln Road, the park has multiple functions.

During the day the park is shaded by pergolas and palm trees. In the evening it is a cultural hotspot, one of the special attractions of the park being a video and sound installation – projecting concerts and video art on building’s 700m2 wall, which serves as an outdoor screen for the park. The park is an urban garden that expresses the euphoria of Miami, and will be actively programmed for public and cultural events.

A website named stumbleupon is probably one of the most interesting tool to discover interesting and fun infos on the net. I've been a user of the stumbleupon toolbar for quite a while, and it has introduced me to a series of fun and beneficial informations. Today I stumbled upon a website that lists The World's 18 Strangest Gardens. A few design caught me eye and I'm listing a few in this post. Actually I dont find these gardens strange, I found it very interesting.

[1] California Academy of Sciences' Living Roof.

Location : San Francisco, Calif.

Why It's Unique : The garden's two larger contours sync up to the planetarium and rainforest exhibitions down below, but the roof is as functional as it is aesthetically pleasing. More photos click here.

[2] Las Pozas

Location : Xilitla, Mexico

Why It's Unique : At points, it seems as though the abundance of artwork would detract from the beauty of the natural landscape and diverse fauna. Then again, it's a small plot of land when considering the size of the whole rainforest, and as the years pass, the artwork and gardens meld into the environment more and more. [3] Step Garden at Acros Fukuoka

Why It's Unique : Acros Fukuoka's walls are mostly glass, allowing natural light to flood the building year-round. More photos click here.

[4] White Head Institute Splice Garden

Location : Cambridge, Mass.

Why It's Unique : Looks can be deceptive: Splice Garden's plants are all plastic, and the hedges are actually Astroturf-covered pieces of steel. The hue of green emanating from the ground is the work of colored gravel and green paint. Despite the dearth of genuine vegetation, the final design still provides a calm space for scientists to contemplate protein folding and stem-cell differentiation. More photos click here.

Location : St. Luke's International Hospital, Tokyo

Why It's Unique : People have long extolled the therapeutic benefits of gardens, and a growing number of studies are providing fact-based evidence showing these benefits to be tangible. Callaway points out that there are certain factors that need to be accounted for in the design of a garden for a hospital or healthcare facility. For instance, a continuously looping garden is ideal for patients with Alzheimer's disease, and designers should keep in mind paved pathways and the steepness of inclines for patients in wheelchairs. While Seiruka Garden is conventional in terms of design, having a peaceful retreat at a hospital—whether as a patient, doctor or visitor—is invaluable.

Why It's Unique : Weighing in at more than a quarter of a ton, Hotel Indigo claims this is the world's largest hanging flower basket. The 20-foot by 10-foot basket hangs from 25 feet up in the air and took engineers three weeks to build and a solid day of work to install. Over 100 varieties of flowers and plants are in the pot, and, given London's reputation for rain, they will likely have a prosperous future.

Footpath Making Technology

I came across a blog that tells about this awesome footpath making technology. Memang awesome! It saves time, cost and money. As we all aware, interlocking pavers are used not only for footpath but also on roads. Dataran Merdeka, Putrajaya and even UPM uses this type of surface on the road. It promotes sense of alert and awareness for drivers. I wonder if locally we have this machine.

View of the trunk (notice the pen as size comparison), the flower and the leaves. The leaf of the Baobab tree is almost the same as Sterculia foetida. The trunk could be the most striking character of this tree. During the construction of the main building of this faculty, this tree was about to be sacrificed. 4 sebab kenapa belum kahwin

Memang adat masyarakat Melayu, benchmark ditetapkan mengikut taraf umur. Masa lepas UPSR, soalan seterusnya ialah nak masuk skolah mana? Ambik aliran apa? Lepas SPM, soalan susulan ialah nak masuk Universiti mana? Kolej mana? Bila dah graduate, soalan susulan ialah nak kerja kat mana? Bila dah ada pasangan, soalan susulan ialah bila nak kahwin? Bila dah kahwin, soalan susulan ialah dah 'ada' ke? And the list goes on.

Hidup penuh dengan persoalan. Tu yang paling tepat rasanya.

Semalam skali lagi aku dihujani soalan susulan. Soalan susulan yang paling aku gemar. Bila nak kahwin?

Esok-esok lah. Lain kali lah aku bagi jawapan. Boleh?

Ada beberapa sebab aku tak boleh nak settle down. Antaranya:

Aku masih student. Lecture dan perut maju kedepan adalah dua bidang yang agak tidak relevan. Bagi aku lah.
Kewangan belum ada. Kalau ikut kehendak aku, setakat pulut kuning sudah cukup. Tapi masyarakat Malaysia meletak level perkahwinan = belanja 20k.
Aku sendiri yang tidak mahu. Aku tidak percaya kepada perkahwinan. Eh, tu macam ayat kawan aku yang baru nikah jumaat lalu. Bukan aku tak percaya, aku belum mahu.
Aku masih dalam proses 'mengenal diri'

I can give more excuses but who needs them? So kesimpulannya, lain kali lah aku bagi jawapan kepada persoalan bila aku akan kahwin. Ok?

Benda baik, kalau ikhlas, tak perlu nak hebahkan kat orang lain. Suratkhabar, majalah, internet, status facebook. Aku banyak baca pendedahan amalan baik orang kat sini. Didedahkan oleh diri sendiri, bukan secara candid oleh orang lain.

Rakyat semakin padat

Plan view semasa feeding time budak-budak kat rumah. 3 ekor mak kucing berjaya melahirkan rascals yang comel-comel. Sekor dapat 4 anak, sekor dapat 4 jugak dan sekor dapat 3 anak. Kucing dewasa ada 10 ekor. Kecah? Go figure.

Suasana makan yang agak tenteram sebab hanya budak-budak saja dibenarkan makan dalam rumah.

Hi. Saya nandek. Saya ada tompok bulu putih kat dahi. Tengah-tengah dahi saya. Saya pakai stokin. Stokin saya sumer putih dan sekata.

Saya belum ada nama. Tuan rumah tak reti nak bagi nama apa ntah. Saya je satu-satunya yang mempunyai hidung pesek. Tak macam yang lain sumer mancung. Saya lebih gemuk dari yang lain dan saya rasa saya hot.

Nak anak kucing? Aku boleh bagi, tak ada masalah. Asalkan jaga dengan baik :)

Today I had a shopping date with my beasties yang paling beasties. Well, I have a few beasties but these are my favourite. I got in the train at 10.30am, heading to Bandaraya, to help Wani buy a few stuff. Girl stuff.

I wore a purple shirt, DKNY jeans and long cardi from Nichii. With me are my knitted IKEA big bag, my 5 year old BATA shoes and a pair of headphones plugged in my brother's MP3 player.

Arrived at Bandaraya and luckily enough, Along and Wani was in the same train with me. Tau kenapa aku sangat sayang mereka-mereka ini? Sebab ada saja kebetulan yang menarik berlaku. Then off to Jalan TAR we go. Singgah Gulati's. Singgah Euro Moda.

Akhirnya tersadai kat Jakel.

Then the cam-whoring begins. Nasib baik handphone aku mempunyai keupayaan kamera yang agak baik. Wani is trying the veil while reporting to the boss about the price of everything.

Kenapa Along sengih-sengih lain macam nehh~

Pantang nampak cermin. Oh, I'm wearing the hijab I'm selling at this blog. [iklan. iklan]. I'm stocking up a few new materials for the blog.

Percubaan aku menjadi minah arab. It doesn't seem like working ;p

Ikim joined us later that day. Wani & Along berjaya meracun Ikim untuk MC. Hahaha. They are trying out the new material I bought for my hijab. Along dan Ikim kena beli sorang satu! Tak kira~

The day ended at 4pm with loving arms around each other. Awwww~ I love you guys!

Aku pulak keluar bersama rakan - Beck, Nizam Nuri & Farah. Dhilla menyusul kemudian. Layan movie. Pada mula ingat nak layan Astroboy. Kensel. Nampak poster Twilight - citer pasal drakula & cinta. Kensel sebab Beck kata tak best. So amek citer Ninja Assassin. Letih layan citer ni. Dari mula sampai ke habis, berpaket-paket darah palsu direnjis merata-rata.

Aku terbayang citer Ichii the Killer.

Ok kat sini aku nak pesan pasal Personal Space. Setiap orang ada personal space masing2. Personal space ni lebih kurang macam zon selesa yang mana ada jarak tertentu antara kita dan orang keliling. Unless ko kuar ngan isteri/suami/kekasih mesti tanak ada jarak satu inci pon. Sila lah berdiri sedekat-dekatnya satu hasta dengan stranger sebelah anda.

Takyah berdiri dekat-dekat ngan aku masa beli tiket wayang. Tak payah nak gesel-gesel ngan aku. Aku hanya bernafsu pada lelaki, ok?

Shopping mall or any other public area adalah satu pentas pertunjukan fesyen. Kau akan dapat melihat pelbagai jenis fesyen diperagakan oleh penduduk setempat mahupun luar. Yang bertudung, yang berskirt, yang berskinny top and bottom dan jugak yang berjubah bagai.

Yeah, aku suka mangsa fesyen.

Malam nya, wedding sedara di Park Royal, Bukit Bintang. Grand. Pink. Limited seats. Not to my liking. Anyway, congrats Anum. Selamat Pengantin Baru.

Perubahan Cuaca Manusia

Aku rasa manusia ni lebih kurang macam 'cuaca'. Kejab cerah, kadang-kadang mendung, skali skala ribut petir, angin kencang agak kerap. Barangkali manusia ni boleh dikategorikan sebagai satu alam. Sebab tu kot ada subjek Alam & Manusia masa sekolah rendah dulu. Tak ada? Oh kau sangat la born in the 90's.

Aku layan berita tempoh hari, menteri-menteri dunia nak bincang pasal cuaca di Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting a.k.a CHOGM. Kenapa common-wealth aku pon tak tahu. Sama kaya? Barangkali? Anyway, dikatakan akan dibincangkan perihal cuaca dunia yang semakin tak menentu. All the best. Not bad, try again.

Tapi la kan, aku rasa la kan, cuaca manusia ni boleh dikawal. Kena sabar lebih sikit ja. Ok lah. Jom try.

I've been focusing too much on my mom's blog that MY own di-anak-tiri-kan. Olololo~ Nice bloggy. I love you lots *smooch*

2009 is almost over. Percaya tak? I'm sure it was fun for all as it was for me. Well, sure ada ups and downs but thats just life. Pathetically true but, yeah, you know.

I watched a video at Wani's facebook (hooray to facebook addicts... oh that includes you) about a counselling session between a mom and his son. They argue everyday! For what reason, I'm not sure of.

From what I see, the mom is just doing her job - when ever she sees his son doing something not right, she will advice him, tell him what to do, scold him if necessary. Well that is what parents are for, to teach us the lessons of life.

Most of us accepted that nature without question. We love our parents therefore we respect and obey what they say (unless it is bad for you ;p).

Again, from what I see, children are fed with the ideology of 'human rights'. I have the right to speak. I have the right to say no. I have the right to do what I want. Yeah, it applies in certain conditions ONLY. This boy literally smacked his mom and told her to shut up. He screams "what give you the right to hit me on my elbow". "I'm your mom, I can do that if you don't behave". Right-o son. You deserve a smack bottom for slapping your mom in the face like that.

If you are here, your mom won't bother, she have lots of other who are willing to hit you.

Everywhere we go, there are certain rules or limits we have to follow. Yes, we are entitled to our own self but we have to respect others as well. Thats why there are guidelines or specific rules we have to follow.

This human right thing can seriously give negative impact if not used wisely. People tend to do whatever they like and claim it "its my right".

I remember when I was the student representative. A student launch a protest inside the university compound. He even brought in representatives from SUHAKAM. When he was questioned by the top-guns of the university he loudly say "it is my right as student! i can go wherever i like! i only stepped on the grass, i didn't go to the main building". Then the person in charge politely replied "then i want to just step on your grass at home and piss. i have the right also".

We have our territories my friend.

Human rights. Indeed.

I turned on the TV. Channel surfing mode *click *click *click. Then i stopped at the History Channel. A docu about WTC on fire was on. The Sept 11th tragedy.

They lost 2 tall buildings. It is nothing compared to a nation they gladly help to destroy.

Every year the same docu is on air. Why? Is it to remind them of the tragedy? Or to embed hatred in the citizens? I remember a friend of mine who was abroad at the time, she was thrown with stones because she wears a hijab. In short, she was a muslim.

Every religion states, God have plans for us all. If we accept the plan God laid upon us; whether it involves us losing loved ones, I don't see the need of reminding the citizens about how cruel the so-called terrorists are. Things happen for a reason. Kifarah.

Kenapa, bilamana ada title yang hebat, perlu kah jadik kurang sopan dengan mempersendakan orang lain?

Kenapa, bilamana pemandu adalah perempuan, perlu kah jadik korang sopan dengan menunjuk hebat di jalan raya?

Sesetengah keadaan, yang mana, kalau tak mahu pun lah, perlu pura-pura hormati orang lain. Jangan lah pula kerana wanita itu bukan warganegara sini, kamu perlu nak tunjuk tabiat kurang sopan terutama di depan seluruh warga anggota mesyuarat. Macam mana pon, kamu tu ada title professor. Bukan kah sepatutnya lebih tahu menghormati yang lain? Kasihan, perlu ada kelas tambahan nampaknya.

Aku tak paham. Sampai ke hari ini. Oleh kerana aku ni perempuan (walaupun ada yang claim aku ni 'lelaki'), perlu kah nak 'pengkes' aku dengan laju-laju? Perlu kah nak himpit kereta aku sampaikan aku nak langgar kereta lain di lorong sebelah?

Macam entri sia-sia je.....

Sebenarnya aku dah tak reti nak update blog aku ni.

Aku rasa, setiap orang akan ada satu tahap yang mana, segala benda macam Myspace, Friendster, Facebook, Tagged atau apa-apa lagi medium publisiti yang ada, adalah satu benda yang tidak perlu ada. Kalau ada pon, sekadar nak ada, buat tengok-tengok, update kawan-kawan atau nak buat announcement.
